Plants make food, receive carbon dioxide and give the city colour and scent. Yet the air of 100,000 people cannot depend on gardens alone. Cultivation, fermentation and chemical processing protect table and breath together.
The city's lungs are not one enormous forest. They are overlapping systems that keep breathing when one stops.
A planted garden is both park and production.
Leaves, herbs and fruiting crops grow beside neighbourhood streets. Residents see a park; operators monitor light, nutrients, carbon dioxide and signs of disease. Decorative and edible green share everyday space.
Plants are not the sole oxygen guarantee. Independent oxygen generation and carbon-dioxide removal prevent a crop decision from becoming an air-safety decision.

Mycelium, yeast, algae and cultivated protein need no broad soil field. Controlled vessels produce bread, seasonings and main-dish ingredients quickly enough to respond to changing demand.
Fermentation also stores a concentrated harvest and prevents a monotonous menu. Life-support technique becomes neighbourhood aroma and family flavour over generations.

Ventilation gathers carbon dioxide for growing rooms and treatment systems. Odour, humidity and particles are monitored by district, allowing disease or fire to appear first as a change in air.
A growing room with disease can be isolated from circulation. Food production may pause, but habitation keeps breathing. A beautiful green city and a safe city require related but distinct systems.
