EDUCATION + WORK / ARC–04 ACADEMIC DISTRICT
Learning and making.
Ordinary work keeps space alive.
A lunar city needs more than rockets and mines. Teachers, cooks, nurses, stage technicians and shoe designers matter just as much. Where 100,000 people live, the least spectacular jobs often become the most essential.
The closer a city comes to completion, the fewer of its residents need to be called astronauts.
The class grows more than plants.
At 11:20 Nao's class takes charge of the school's growing rack. Students record leaf colour, root temperature and water flow, then look for anomalies left by yesterday's team. This is not a demonstration: the harvest will become lunch.
The lesson is less about finding the right answer than leaving a clear record for the next person. On the Moon, honest handover is as important to safety as the skill to repair a machine.

Gravity designers plan how people fall.
The afternoon visit is to a gravity-environment studio. At roughly one sixth of Earth's gravity, standing up, shelving a package or descending stairs can produce too much momentum. Designers consider flooring, rails, shoe soles and corner widths as one system.
Doctors, coaches, cleaners and wheelchair users test each prototype. Low-gravity design is not a visual style; it is the shared feeling that different bodies can move safely.

A city that never stops has three daytimes.
Air, water, power, medicine and transport run around the clock. Some residents begin in the morning, some in the evening and others at midnight. Kitchens and nurseries open across shifts so families with different schedules can still live together.
Night workers do more than cover the day shift. Quiet hours allow pipe inspections and software changes that cannot happen in a busy street. Another working day carries the visible city toward morning.
